THE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST (OT) DRIVING ASSESSMENT

Before you sit your driving test, you may be advised to have an on-road and off-road Occupational Therapist driver assessment.    

Depending on your situation, the assessor may evaluate:

  • The need for specialised equipment or vehicle modifications 
  • your use of existing vehicle modifications, hand controls or appliances to help you drive 
  • your ability to control the vehicle 
  • your physical skills, reaction time, insight level and ability to self-monitor
  • your understanding of road rules

After your assessment, the assessor may recommend:

  • the need for vehicle modifications
  • rehabilitation or retraining before you sit your driving test
  • licence conditions or restrictions
  • alternatives to driving

They'll provide a driving assessment report with information such as:

  • an assessment of your particular condition
  • how a vehicle modification might assist your driving
  • when you need to be reassessed.

Who needs an OT assessment? 

You might need an OT driving assessment if you have been diagnosed with a medical or health condition that may impact on your capacity to drive safely, or if you have recently suffered an injury. Transport Authorities require that drivers are legally obligated to report any significant medical condition, and there may be serious legal and financial consequences if you fail to report your health condition.

Often, your GP or specialist will recommend that you need an OT driving assessment, and they will notify your local transport authority of this. Your family and friends may also be concerned about your ability to drive safely, and may refer you to our service.

How an OT Driving Assessment Works at onroad

At Onroad, we provide a specialty driver assessment service for people following medical illness, injury or disability and which may impact on the person's ability to drive. This service aims to enhance a person's safety and independence, helping the person to keep an active lifestyle. Our goal is to enable you or your family member to begin or return to driving safely and legally.

We are industry leaders & are able to use our experience to tailor our services to your individual needs. Our service incorporates latest evidence and conducts on-going research and quality improvement. We volunteer our time to input into a range of policy and environmental factors shaping this area of practice & to make your experience better, year after year.

The OT driving assessment is the same for all individuals, regardless of their health condition or injury. The assessment is split into two parts and takes approximately 3 hours:

  1. The clinical assessment: This is an off-road screening that looks at your visual, physical and cognitive abilities and identifies any deficits or issues. This is done in your home with the OT, and family are welcome to attend.
  2. The practical driving assessment: This is the on-road test around your local area. You will drive the driving instructor’s dual controlled vehicle (with modifications or aids as needed) and the OT and driving instructor will assess if your injury or medical condition affects your ability to drive safely. After the Occupational Therapy driving assessment, the OT will discuss with you the results and outcomes, and will inform you what happens next (e.g. your condition does not affect your driving; or you may need driving lessons to become proficient with new vehicle modifications).

The OT will then send the assessment report with the recommendations to you, your transport authority and your doctor (or referral source). This report is usually completed within 2 weeks following the assessment.

Disability driving test

The disability driving test is the same as a standard driving test but with additions prescribed from the OT driving assessment.

If you need special vehicle fittings to be able to drive, you must pass the driving test in a vehicle that has these fittings.
