Why the safer driver course?

INTRODUCED BY NSW GOVERNMENT

The Safer Driver Course was introduced by the NSW Government from July 2013 and it has been designed by Transport for NSW with the goal of educating young learner drivers under the age of 25 on safe driving practices.

REDUCING FATALITIES

Research shows that Learners are at a much higher risk of crashes and accidents, while they are in the mode of getting their P1 Licence. It also shows that the Learners who have more supervised driving practice have a lower chance of being involved in a fatal crash.

CREATING AWARENESS

The main aim of the Safer Driver Course is to make people aware of safe and defensive driving methods, which can help them in the future also. Onroad Driving Education is very passionate about this course because it sets out to improve learner drivers' level of driving and enhances their defensive driving skills.

The course consists of two modules

MODULE 1

3 HOUR INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP

This workshop shows learners how to identify and manage risks while driving. 

Module 1 is led by an experienced facilitator with up to 12 participants. Research has shown that the transition from supervised to unsupervised driving is when drivers are most at risk of a fatal accident or severe injury. 

Module 1 aims to give participants the knowledge required to reduce this risk.

Participants will come away from Module 1 with the knowledge and understanding of:

  • Why they are about to enter the highest-risk driving period.
  • What factors lead to this high-risk period.
  • How to identify these factors and risks.
  • How to manage and reduce the associated risks.
  • Low risk driving strategies.

Module 1 also prepares participants for unsupervised driving and gives them driving skills for life. Onroad Driving Education regularly runs Module 1 at various locations throughout Sydney.

MODULE 2

2 HOUR IN-CAR PRACTICAL TRAINING

This practical training shows learners low-risk driving strategies. 

Module 2 is conducted with 2 participants and puts the concepts learned in Module 1 into practice with an experienced RMS accredited driving instructor.

Participants will gain practical skills in:

  • Following distances.
  • Gap selection.
  • Hazard perception.
  • Speed management.

Onroad Driving Education provides Module 2 at a range of locations throughout Sydney. The time and location of Module 2 are organised with your trainer at Module 1, however, we are very flexible with our times and locations to ensure the training is run as conveniently as possible for you. 

Module 2 must be completed within 1 month of Module 1.

Safer driver course and the learner logbook system

A learner driver must have 120 hours entitled in his logbook under various conditions in order to take the road test.

If both the modules of the Safer Driver Course are completed, learner drivers will have 20 hours reduced in their logbook i.e they will need 100 hours more.

The Safer Driver Course is FREE for Concession Card Holders.

Eligibility criteria

CRITERIA 1

Safer Drivers Course is available to learner drivers under the age of 25 years in NSW.

CRITERIA 2

A learner driver must have completed 50 logbook driving hours.

CRITERIA 3

Bonus hours are excluded from Professional Driving Lesson hours $140 payable to Onroad Driving Education

CRITERIA 4

A learner driver must attend Module 1 and Module 2 within the time frame of 4 weeks.

CANCELLATION POLICY

CANCELLATION of a booking must be made 7 days in advance for a full refund.

cancellations can be made up to 48 hours prior to the scheduled course. No refund will be given, but the course can be rescheduled to another date.

Cancellations made within 48 hours of the scheduled course will incur the full fee.

No refund will be given for non-attendance.

If you are late, you will not be allowed to attend the course.

If the course is cancelled by the provider, you will be rebooked for another date that is convenient for you or you may request a refund.

 Safer Drivers Course provides learners speed management, hazard perception skills and better conception regarding safe driving with lower risk.  After completing Safe Drivers Course learner will receive 20 hours of credit in their logbook,as they need 120 supervised driving hours to get learner provisional licence. 

 WHAT IS INCLUDED IN SAFER DRIVERS COURSE? 

 The Safer Drivers Course includes two modules: 

 Module 1:  A three-hour facilitated group discussion in which provides learners to learn how to manage risks on the road and speed management technique giving case studies or others strategic games related to hazardous awareness regarding speed and distance.
 Module 2:   Two hour practical session  in vehicle with an instructor  and another learner to develop low-risk driving strategies so that learners can  learn a way of practical safe driving behaviours. 

 COST OF THE COURSE 

 The Course costs $140 and it  directly paid to the Course Provider. All Course materials will be supplied at the Course timings and the learners must have to bring learner licence and learner driver log book with them.
